When should I call 112?

Call 112 for a threat to life or health, injury, fire, a dangerous leak or when the location cannot be made safe. For a routine breakdown, call roadside assistance.

Immediately after stopping

Switch on the hazard lights and, when safe, stop outside the traffic lane or as close to the edge as possible. Put on a reflective vest before leaving the vehicle.

  • Passengers should leave on the side away from moving traffic.
  • On a motorway, wait behind the safety barrier when it can be reached safely.
  • Never stand between the disabled vehicle and approaching traffic.

Marking the location

Polish Police guidance places the warning triangle about 1 m behind the car in a built-up area, 30–50 m outside a built-up area and 100 m on a motorway or express road.

  • Provide the road number, direction, nearest exit or kilometre marker.
  • Call 112 for injury, fire, a dangerous leak or an immediate hazard.
  • A routine, safely marked breakdown without danger to life does not require a 112 call.
